The main cause of the terminal form of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is diabetic nephropathy. For today there are no effective drugs for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy in medical practice.
Aim. To study experimentally the antioxidant properties of drug Gluquamine on the background of the diabetic nephropathy development in order to substantiate the feasibility of its use in CKD therapy.
Materials and methods. The study was performed on the model of diabetic nephropathy caused by intraperitoneal administration of alloxan in the dose of 200 mg/kg in 56 rats. The content of lipid peroxidation products in the blood and kidneys of animals, as well as the state of the antioxidant defense system, were determined.
Results. Under the effect of Gluquamine on day 90 of the study there was a significant decrease in the content of diene conjugates and TBA-reactants in the blood and the homogenate of the rat kidneys. It indicates a decrease in the intensity of lipid peroxidation processes. In addition, an increase in the content of reduced glutathione, as well as the activity of SOD and catalase, was observed in the kidney homogenate. It indicates normalization of the state of the antioxidant system. In this case, Gluquamine by most indicators was superior to the reference drugs Quercetin and Lespephril.
Conclusions. Under the conditions of the nephropathy development on the background of diabetes mellitus Gluquamine exerts a pronounced antioxidant action and is a promising drug for CKD therapy.
